The Lorenz attrac­tor illus­trates the endur­ing activ­i­ty of a mod­el of atmos­pher­ic con­vec­tion, as first not­ed by Edward Lorenz.  It uses three dif­fer­en­tial equa­tions that, when graphed, form the image of a but­ter­fly. It is a sen­si­tive sys­tem that lends to the idea of the but­ter­fly effect, in which a tiny change in a large, com­plex sys­tem can cre­ate broad and unex­pect­ed con­se­quences that may lead to chaos.
